I have a block of text in the logo banner of one of my sites. When I check on google to see what pages are indexed, all the pages have this same block of text in the description. Google is ignoring what's in the actual description meta-tag, and using this text instead. Is there a way I can mark the text so that google either looks further down the page for descriptive text, or actually uses the meta-tag, without resorting to cloaking?

google looks for text on the page that is related to the search term (keywords) you input. If you are searching for your company name or site:domain.name it looks for the first instance of this on the page and includes it in the result.

If it finds it in the meta description it will display it with some of the surrounding text, if not it will keep looking.

If all of your results are showing (regardless of search term) with the alt tag text displayed, then that might be the best place to alter your message.
