redirecting googlebot to cached pages

Will google penalize for redirecting to mirror cached pages to reduce load?

It was suggested that we might be able to redirect googlebots to cached pages updated monthly on a mirror site to reduce the spiders load on our server.

Anyone doing this with success. Anyone encountered problems?

I searched but didn't seem to find any threads on this.

Please point me to previous posts on this subject if possible.
