I just added a new page to my site which refers to a now defunct website who's URL still gets plenty of hits on Google. After adding this new page, I noticed that my PR for that page jumped to 4 and when I entered the URL of the defunct site in Google search, my site popped up 2nd in the results. Today, it's a different story. PR for that page in my site is now 0 and my site doesn't rank at all in the Google results for the defunct website. All of this has taken place in the space of about 36 hours. Any ideas why?
Thanks in advance and have a great day!
Would really appreciate if someone who understands the Pagerank system a little better than I could shed some light on my question....
Cheers
Google has many datacenters and these are not always perfectly synchronised. Variations in results from different datacenters are common and during updates of PR, that too may vary. Load balancing methods are used to select datacenters semi-randomly for each query.

Just seemed odd that literally the day after I put the page up, it ranked 2nd in the results for that keyword and now it's as if it was never there.
In the days of monthly updates, this phenomenom was called "everflux". Since rolling updates were implemented, people don't talk about "everflux" because it shouldn't exist. I haven't seen it myself for a while, but comments like yours (which is by no means unique) suggest everflux still exists.
Stability should be achieved after a few weeks (fingers crossed).
