Give your styles short and relevant names that make it easy for you to remember what is what
Great advice, I'm going to start following it too. Enough of going crazy with optimization!
I used to optimize everything and the kitchen sink, but it does make things difficult in terms of design. Now then...was that small Verdana text called KW1 or KW1000?
In terms of gain by optimizing style and "class" tags etc. I think there is absolutely nothing gained. From the sites I am keeping track of, the ones that have been zapped for certain KW phrases it appears that they do not HARM anything. I have old sites that have disappeared for KW phrases that have absolutely No optimization in styles, just as some have been vanquished that do.
I believe Google simply ignores most attributes, with the exception of alt tags that are links and alt tags that appear where there is very little or no on page text.
It's difficult to imagine Google having, let alone dedicating resources to analyzing the billions of pages and possible ways of optimizing them. Where do they draw the line? CSS? Absolute positioning? Font color same as background picture image? The list is infinite.
Keep style for page design and content for users.
Content is what you optimize, right? So why would you optimize your styles?
It's a lot easier to say "insertpicr" to insert a picture on the right hand side of the page than to say, "keyword_photo_gallery_right" isn't it?
Remember, you can always over optimize, keep it simple and good things will happen.
be an extra trick?
"extra" what other "tricks" are you using? Perhaps it is these other tricks that have stopped you ranking well.
I would say a BIG NO to any tricks, there is simply no need for them.
