Today I registered the .net version of an up and coming TV show on FOX. FOX has registered the .com version but currently doesn't have a site there. They do have a site on fox.com/showname/

I would like to use this domain for profit. Did I just waste $8 buying it?

Depends on whether they eventually decide they want it -- they might not, and they might not even notice. I'd say at least that you risked $8 by buying it.

Absolutely not. If they approach you and say that they want you to quit what you're doing, I would offer to sell it to them rather than make them take it away from you, though.

I have fared pretty well registering domain names that are very similar to trademarked names and such. If your work seems to encourage interest in the topic and doesn't take anything away from the real product, then they ought to let you keep up your work. You are helping each other out.

If, on the other hand, they want you to stop, you usually seem to get one chance to sell out to them ("settle out of court" as it is). With someone like FOX, you would be prudent to settle.

Good luck with your venture!

PS - I am not a lawyer; this is not legal advice; your milage may vary; offer not valid in California; checks will not be honored.

Hmmm, Just one thing that popped into my head, this wont work with all domains... but, seeing as it's a TV show, if, when you do try and sell your .TV to them, they decline, simply make it into a fan-site for that particular TV show.

I too, am not a lawyer but I think they would be hard pressed to take the domain away from you then... at least you could try and make some money from advertising your site and getting users to pay for certain services relating to that TV program... a T-Shirt store or whatever!

Good luck and welcome to WebmasterWorld,
