So we have .com, .org, .biz etc (no not .etc just etc!) now and more on the way.

What happens though if they create a .name which fits your category, do you feel that there should be tighter regulation to ensure that you can keep your domain name no matter what the .name?

For example imagin you run a very well known site about X if the internet people finally decide to create a .X do you feel you should have first say to the yourdomainname.X?

Is there any regulations on this or is it a mass free for all?

There is so many extenstions now, it's just getting out of hand, and less and less people care to register them all to protect brand etc.

.com will always be the diamond, and .net the silver and .org the bronze, the rest doesn't even finish up in top 10 (There is a huge gap between the rest)

I agree but I cannot help thinking that perhaps INTERNIC (or whoever it is now) is trying to create a road system which will inevitably lead to regulation in many companies.

This imho means that companies selling X will eventually have to regulated somehow worldwide.

I agree that many extensions do not mean that much, but some such as .computers .adult .travel or .news or even others could as it would make it easier to control.

For me I must admit it is a grave concern.

I think that you have to look at your overall strategy for us .com is gold, .co.uk silver, .biz bronze

But it depends on the nature of the business.

.net and .org would be more valuable in some cases.

There are enough dns problems with the main tlds without starting to worry about the proliferation of minor tlds.

I see these catagorizing the web in the future. I think will see a .adult or something like it for regulations. Just like the .kid. I think we are grandfathered in for the future, but people starting out later will have problems breaking in.
