When I am checking wwWebmasterWorldebsitename.com with register.com (My registrar) it is giving with my details but expiry details it is showing Exp. date:23rd Jan 2003 status:Registrar lock. But when I am checking with www.xwhois.com it is showing expiry date:24jan 2004. I have given the contract to old hosting company person to renew the domain.
I don't understand whether he has renew my domain or not? Site is not coming at all, when I am pinging the site. Each time it is giving different ip addresses. One time it is going to some another web site also.

How many days register.com hold the domain after expiry?
Another if somebody grab my domain can I get back from him?

This is the 1st time I am sending to any discussion forum hope I will get the result quickly.

You can renew your domain with register.com yourself by click on the "Renew Now" button.

Anyone can renew any domain available on the internet, i would do it myself to be sure it has been renewed.

No, your domain has not been renewed!

The registrar's whois is the most accurate one. The registry's whois just started showing expiration date, previously they didn't show this. When your domain is at the end of its life, The registry adds one additional year to your domain. But YOU HAVE NOT PAID FOR THIS YEAR. This is a hot issue for registrars right now. The Registry just added this field, however. Registry accounting needs to be explained...

Upon your domain reaching the 'auto-renew' period, the Registry adds one additional year to your term. However, You have not paid for this year. So if after 45 days and you still have not paid the registrar then your domain will be deleted and the extra year will disappear. You actually have to pay for it, it is not a mistake in your favor. ;)

The registry output is very confusing for people that don't understand Registry accounting. Please contact your registrar for more details and to confirm anything about your domain.

Thanks for the immediate reply. I have checked my domain in internic.net whois database. It is also showing my domain expiry on 24th Jan 2004 updated database on 30th Jan 2003.

I was unable to fetch the concerned person for domain renewal so I didn't undertstand whether it has been reneed or not.

If the registrant contact witn us & Admin email is with somebody else. Can we make the changes in whois database.

Lisa,

How long have they been adding a year onto the expiry dates?

You also say "The Registry just added this field, however." Are you talking about the expiration date field? And why did they add this?

Are you sure .coms and .nets have not been recently put on automatic extension like .org has been because of the review of expiration policy at PIR?

Also on another note, what is the definitive way to assess whether a domain has become available or not? I know you can try to register it as any registrar as one way of telling but are their records of availability up to date? In my experience some registrars are faster than others at determining availability.

Many thanks....

Internic.net only shows whois records for the registry. Please use a tool that does registrar whois lookups as well.

>> How long have they been including this field?
Since the 25th of January 2003 at about 5PM PST. You can see this post [webmasterworld.com] on new fields. The have always added a year, you just haven't seen the field before. Registrars get their money back if they delete the domain with in 45 days after the auto-renew. So if you don't pay for that extra year, you didn't earn it and you can fear being deleted within 45 days after your real REGISTRAR expiration date. (NOTE: See registrar whois, not registry)

The added it because ummmm, people wanted it. :) More information is always better!

Yes, trying to register the domain is the best way to see if it is available. Whois is often out of date, usually several hours old. RRP is the best way to check, but only registrars have access to the Registry-Registrar Protocal.

Registrar: REGISTER.COM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.register.com
Referral URL: [register.com...]
Name Server: NS.PRONTOSERV.COM
Name Server: NS2.PRONTOSERV.COM

Within the period of 45 days is there any chance that someone take my domain.

Lisa thanks. I can't tell you how long I have poked around the Internet unsuccessfully for that explanation. Invaluable to have somebody of your expertise here.

upendra,
To check whois of the registry or registrar try Whois Source [www.] (disclaimer: I am afilliated with this site). Checking the registrar is automatic, most whois programs will look up the Registry whois and then proceed to the Registrar whois.

>> Within the period of 45 days is there any chance that someone take my domain.

Yes, there is always that chance. Do not play around with losing your domain, to many people play this game of thinking they can just register their own domain after it expires instead of paying the renewal fee at the current registrar. I would advice against it.

Dear Madam,
If the Admin contact, Technical contact is not with me is there any chance that I can renew my domain from any other service provider. Domain has got only my Address but jot my email also. And my domain expiry date is 23rd jan 2003. Is there any way I can save my domain from expiry. Cost of register.com for renewal is very much high as I have purchased only in Rs.400/- Indian rupees but to pay now Rs.3000/- its little costly affair. But in India renewal can be done from Rs.500-600. In this case what is your suggestion to renew my domain.
