Hi folks, Happy New Year and all.

I was wondering if someone could help me. I have a situation where I have 3 micro sites all with their own url. Someone within the Marketing division has decided that these sites are to be de-commissioned and that they want to redirect all 3 urls to one page within another one of our websites.

The 3 microsites have all been set up to help obtain good rankings in the SE's, and they have been very successful!

What effect will the request from the marketing division have on the rankings?

Would this be seen as spamming by the SE's?

I apologise if this topic has already been posted. I did search the site, however, I don't have much time to read all the results.

Thanks.

You need to use a 301 redirect from the microsites urls to the main domain. You will lose all of your rankings because you are telling the engines that this domain name will permanently be pointing towards this other domain. If you don't use a 301 you have a chance of a penalty. Most likely engines will just merge the domian names, but you could get hit with duplicate content penalty. To a user agent pointing 3 domains to the same site appears that you have 3 identical sites up.

how does a 302 redirect differ from a 301 redirect?
