There is a certain domain registrar in the UK that is taking the old chestnut "someone is trying to register a version of your name" scam to new heights.

Nominet, normally better known for burying it's head in the sand over the dubious sales techniques of a small minority of it's members, has actually taken the extraordinary step this week of actually publishing a warning page concerning one of their own members and has actually put a link to the page on the front page of the Nominet site.

Check it out at [nic.uk...]

actually, I think that if a company had not registered it our name i don't see a problem selling it to them. I think the problems start when you hard sell all the combinations out of the fear factor .. "what if your competitor registers them!"

companyname
companyname-product
companyname-brand
companynameproduct
companynamebrand

We had a number of Customers who'd been approached by these guys and were told that although they owned theirdomain.co.uk, they already had another customer ready to buy theirdomain.com - unless they wanted to buy it first right there and then.

Fortunately, nobody went for it and most passed the relevant information on to us for use in our complaints to the people at Nominet.

I'm all for making a buck, but these guys are basically putting the frightners on people in order to sell their products - it's the actions of this minority that can taint the reputation of a whole industry.

Just my five cents worth.

as an update on this - Nominet have begun court proceedings for an injunction against these clowns. if anyone here has been contacted by them, Nominet would appreciate it if you could pass on whatever information you have. the more evidence they have, the better for all concerned.
