OT: Off topic I know, but I have for some time wanted a way of checking OLD whois information. Does anyone know of an archive which stores backdated whois information?

andybesy,
I am not aware of any service that offers historic whois data. I have it but I am not offering it to the general public. Sorry.

i have no idea about whois data, but you might be able to get a clue from the wayback machine on archive.org

i have a customer that registered a .com about a month ago and he has been swamped by spam ever since the domain went live. a quick check on the wayback machine showed the domain had previously been registered and was in use by a hosting company until about march 2001. the company contact details are still available from the wayback machine.

Like I said, I don't think there is anything out there. I would know. If I hear of something I will post it here.

Im set on seek, capture and report for this. I have been known for finding very hard to find info no matter how long it takes ( sad eh ).

[coolwhois.com...] archives the results of lookups, so if somebody else has looked up a domain, the record is still there. Only been up for a few months, though. Links to archived versions appear at the bottom of each record.

(Ooh. They've added a bookmarklet since my last visit. I wonder if works with Mozilla?)

Other than that, there's nothing. Registrars are supposed to keep copies of whois records for (I think) three years, but they don't have to share. Urban Legends have it that NSI has everything to back to Day One on tape. That would be something to see, huh?

An interesting one to search for current AND expired domains:
