$6 dolllars a year?

i see you guys taking about $6 for a .com name.I'm in the uk and just paid $110 for two years!! how can i pay $6? Can a domain be registered without parking with a web host and paying even more for hosting an unused name?

Sure, you can get domains much cheaper and you don't have to pay for hosting if you park them.

godaddy.com is cheap/good for global domains
&
namesarecheap.com is good for UK domains.

$6 a year is what ICANN Registrars pay wholesale for .COM, .NET, .ORG domains. Other domains like .INFO and .BIZ are actually a bit cheaper. So you know you are getting a good price if you approach the $6 mark. There are a few companies in the past that tried to go so low that they only made pennies per domain. Companies like that either went bankrupt or they started to raise their prices.

that godaddy.com looks extra good value..did i get this right...i can purchase a .com name for $8.95 a year...park it for free...and transfer it for no extra charge....is there any hidden charges? doh!!!!!!!!..i just paid $110 for two years!..i feel like joe schmock that just walked under a ladder and got hit with ten gallons of white paint..the same day it was made illegal to be covered in white paint with a $500 fine!!!!!

That is correct. All that for $9.

BTW, There is another rule. You can't transfer domains from one registrar to another until the domain is 60 days old. And when transferring the gaining registrar must charge you for one extra year. But you don't lose years that you have paid for. The new registrar is obligated to give you support during those years as well as the extra year.

i park a domain at godaddy..a .com name..1 year later i decide i want to use it..so i transfer it to a uk isp/domain host...they charge me for hosting....how does what u said about another years charge come into effect?..do u mean the hosting charge?..and at renewal...who decides the amount to renew?...

ok, let's say you just bought a .com domain for 2 years. You sit there and think about it for 6 months. Now you have 1.5 years left before the domain expires. Now you transfer the domain to another registrar that is cheaper. Now you have 2.5 years left on the domain. By renewing/transfering the domain to another registrar they tacked on an extra year. Now you wait 3 months. ok, and you are now unhappy again with your registrar B. So you want to transfer/renew again at Registrar C. You now have 3 1/4 years on your domain until it expires. It total you have owned the domain 3/4 of a year but your domain doesn't expire for another 3 1/4 years. So everytime you transfer to another registrar they tact on an extra year. That is why transfers are free. Because they have to renew you for 1 year.

BTW, A registrar is the organization that keeps your domain in good standing and collects money from you. They have very little to do with hosting. To host with someone all you need is go to your registrar and change your name servers on your whois record to your hosting company's name servers. Then tell your hosting company and they will take care of the rest.

god i must sound dumb!!!!!but my only experience is buying through an isp..in the uk....

so why would i be unhappy with a registrar that charges $8.95 a year?..i think i see what u mean with the changing of registrar..by tacking on a year you mean the charge you for a year?...the previuos registrar sill gets the first two years payment and the new one gets the third years payment...but they get it straight away..right?...so the following year you dont pay anything?...god..ive lost the plot again...i mean..u now have 3 years on your domain...does the new registrar get nothing for the second two years?...bear with me..i might get this soon!!!!!!

If you paid for two years at Registrar A but move to Registrar B sooner then one year, Then registrar B gets nothing for the years you paid Registrar A. Registrar B is still obligated to support you even though you paid Registrar A. Whomever is your current registrar bares the responsibility of supporting you. Registrar B receives no pay for the years you have already got on your record.
