drgerhardschulz,
Welcome to Webmaster World! I hope you find yourself at home. Take a look around here, there is a lot of great information at your finger tips. I suggest you start here - A Welcome/Introduction to Webmaster World thread [webmasterworld.com]. We have a general policy of no URL dropping.

In this post [webmasterworld.com] someone asked a similar question.

Domain Appraisal is a tricky task. It can be very subjective. But there are a few general criteria I can layout.

1) Marketability
2) Name Length
3) Brand Recognition
4) Development Value
5) Dot Value
6) Site Traffic
7) Revenue Generating
8) Search Engine Popularity
9) Grammatical / Linguistic value
10) Industry Strength and Positioning
11) Comparable sales value

Lisa,

Cany you elaborate a little on a couple of your list items, specifically:

5. dot value
9. grammatical / linguistic value
10. industry strength and positioning

Thank you in advance for your reply.

rubik,
I am writing a more formal outline as we speak, I will post a new thread on how to appraise a domain using my rules when I am done. It will cover in detail all these things. But sure I would be glad to glance over these three.

5. dot value
The marketing put behind .COM is huge. So if you are using a .COM the value is worth more then a .NET or any other extension. If you use a .DE then your value is also high. It all depends on what the value of your extension is.

9. grammatical / linguistic value
Does it sounds correct? Does it read like a human normally speaks. For example: WebmasterWorld.com, this sounds correct. But WebmasterWorlds.com sounds like there are lots of worlds. The plural form verses the singular form makes a huge difference.

10. industry strength and positioning
If I going to try and sell something with a name, does the name fit what I am selling. SusanBaker.com may be a few things. It could be a lady named Susan Baker, or it could be a Susan that is a baker. On that domain if she wanted to sell baked goods, or if she wanted to sell oven mitts. The baked goods makes sense for that domain, but the oven mitts is stretching it. Perhaps if she wants to sell Oven Mitts she should have called it SusanKitchenSupplies.com.
