Pretty much all hosting company do. But they would only offer you the third level of a domain they or you control. They usually offer you a third level when you don't have your domain or your domain's DNS is not resolving yet.

Thanks Lisa. What I was trying to ask is this:

Are there any domain registrars that offer free third level domains for your personal domain -- i.e. faq.domainiregistered.com

Or do I need access to my own DNS server to do something like this?

try mydomain.com, a free DNS service, it's offers subdomain forwarding and some other features too...
