- Adding fuel to the fire regarding useage of "trade marked word", in this case 'Olympic' against that word as a legitimate part of the English language. Article Here [theregister.co.uk]
- Of greatest concern is this article [technology.scmp.com] regarding Verisign, who own Network Solution, buying GreatDomains, a Domain Name Reseller. This opens up the way for NSI to auction off unclaimed domains as planned. Bad, Bad, Bad.
All for now.

Great domain name sale
NEIL TAYLOR
------------------------------------------------------------
Domain name reseller GreatDomains.com has been bought out by Verisign, owner of the Network Solutions registry.
GreatDomains, which made its name through such high-profile sales as drugs.com and loans.com, resells domain names that have already been listed through a domain registrar such as Network Solutions.
Network Solutions recently began reselling domains through ezDomainAuction.com, which it bought in July. The firm also recently announced that it would begin to auction domain names whose owners had defaulted on their US$35 annual registration fee.
The integration of the two companies will enable buyers to search for a domain among both registered and unregistered databases at once. Users will also be encouraged to use Verisign's encryption services.
GreatDomains, which launched in 1996, charges a range of fees for services such as appraisals and listings and takes a 10 per cent fee from every sale.
"The secondary market for domain names has matured into a strong segment of the Web-identity business," said Network Solutions chief executive Jim Rutt in a statement. "GreatDomains has demonstrated innovation and clear market leadership in this area."
The company's most successful sales have included loans.com, which it brokered for US$3 million, drugs.com for US$823,000 and cinema.com for US$700,000. Domain name values have fallen since the dotcom slump began. GreatDomains reports that the average resale price for a domain name this year has been US$24,468, a 14 per cent drop from last year.
However, the average sale for September increased by 29 per cent over August to US$7,216.
Sixty-seven per cent of domains sold for under US$5,000. Though 59 per cent of domains sold to the United States in the past year, international trade is growing. Hong Kong manages seventh place, after Britain, Canada, Australia, France, South Korea and Germany.
Jeff Tinsley, chief executive of GreatDomains will remain with the company as Verisign's director of Secondary Market Name Services.

[wish I could spell]
So, I have been checking out the whois regularly. If the domain went up for auction, it would probably fall out of my grasp with some bigger players in the states having deeper pockets.
So, my only chance is to beat them to registration if it was released. But, from above, there seems little chance of that :(

I'm in the same boat, as I am sure are a lot of other people.
My view point is that registrars, such as NSI, should be more like governmental bodies, more regulated and restricted in their trade practices. EG., they should register names for people and thats it. Any ideas of auctions shoudl be vetoed immediately. Kind of like double dipping.
There are many registrars who act more ethically. I think it is way beyond time that the whole registration industry pulls its collective socks up!

Hoping for a speedy reply, but expecting none,

Particularly apt for S.A, crime rate is sky high and loads of people carry guns
But - still a great country to travel to :)
Whats interesting about the above case is that the domain owners for southafrica.com have registered a number of other .coms for other countries. So, if they were to succeed, could set a precedent and start a procession.
