How many domains are there in the world?

This is the question I am attempting to answer. Seems like every time I look around there is a new TLD. Or another ccTLD is now offering their ccTLD as a sudo-gTLD. But there is not much known about them. The first basic question I ask is how many exist in each TLD. Or what is the most used second level and how many exist there. (.CO.UK is a good example of a common slccTLD)

So, I have begun to answer that question. I have guesstimated the TOP most used TLDs in the world and then visited their webpages to see if I could find some stats. Some have them do; some don't. For the ones that don't have stats online but which I know are popular I write the administrator (eventually I will write them all). Most are very helpful in providing the domain counts. If the stats can be found online I write a script that downloads the stats every 24 hours.

I know Webmaster World has visitors from all around the world. So I thought I would ask if any of you know a TLD that should be in my top 25 that is not. And if you know how many domains there are… Please sticky me the URL where you found the stats as I validate all stats. Please don’t sticky me non-top 25 TLDs. But right now I am just interested if I am missing big TLDs of second level domains.

Here is a static snap shot of the top 25, I will update them if changes are found.

I don't think Arpa is a TLD.

Well, .DE may be the #2 domain in the world today. But I think that in one year. .US will be #3 and the following year it will replace .DE as the #2 spot.

Just wait for .US to go Sunrise and bam!

CD and ZR are the same country. ZR was deleted last year [iana.org].

What is "Still Polling" supposed to mean?

Some of the numbers on that site are just plain bogus. (For example, it claims there are no Afghan domains. Hello? [amazon.af]) If they don't have data, they should say they don't have data instead of pretending there is no data. DomainAtlas [domainatlas.com] has better numbers for a lot of the ccTLDs.

.arpa is a long story. Let's see how much I can over-simplify it:

1) TLDs didn't exist until 1985. Before that, every host had a unique name one-word name.

2} When .com/.org/.edu/.gov/.mil were created in 1985, .arpa was created as pseudo-domain to hold all the pre-TLD sites. It was a hack to ensure backwards-compatibility.

3) As part of ensuring backwards compatibility, .arpa also got stuck with the job of doing reverse lookups.

4) .arpa is still around doing reverse lookups, and only reverse lookups. There aren't really "people" in .arpa anymore. No mail, no webservers, just routing equipment that most end-users don't need to know about.

5) There was also a pseudo-domain .bitnet so that BITNET sites could connect to the Internet. .bitnet is completely, totally dead now. Sometimes, I miss BITNET. I was a lot quieter than the Internet.

Lisa, .arpa is considered a *special* top level domain.

mbauser2, “Still Polling” means that I am in the process of inquire how many domains they have. I just got a few more countries today. I am hoping to have the list 95% done in a few days (crossing my fingers).

That is good to know about Afghanistan. I have just sent the technical contact an email. Hopefully I will have some numbers soon.

I am aware Arpa is a reverse mapping TLD, however it would be unfair to count all domains under it. Since this is a “Infrastructure” domain I will ignore it. I am after stats on regular domains.

I wonder how Domain Atlas got their numbers. They have a lot of data but there are a few numbers that are way out dated. I will contact them and ask (I will let you know what I find out).

Anyone speak/read spanish? I need some spanish stats! If you can go to [nic.mx...] and see if you can find their domain stats posted online then post the URL.

BTW, I have been able to locate stats for about 100 more TLDs. They will be posted very soon. I will let you know when.

My current stats page says there are 44 Million domains in the world. But I was recently listening to an ICANN conference and they said there were 48 Million, so I am getting close!

Hi Lisa,

How's the list coming on? I'm very interested in seeing the (as-close-as-possible-to-) final result.

I have identified several countries that I can automate getting their stats (about 90). So I will be able to count those domains via a script every night. I have several fields in my database. The field you see displayed on my domain stats page is a manual entry at this time. There is a second field that I have populated automatically every night, but it is not displayed at this time because values change and have irregular output. I am still refining the process for each country and when I feel that the live field is ready I will publish that.

I guesstimate that there are 48 Million domains in the world. I have talked to a few folks and ICANN and they have mentioned that figure to me. My current stats only show 44 million so I am very close. Only missing 4 Million or 9% missing from my page. :)

I am trying to classify each domain as either a top level or a parent of multiple second levels. I find that it is hard to classify all TLDs. For example .UK is not used. The UK only uses second level such as .CO.UK, but other countries only us the top level like .TV. Then there are some that use cross types they use a little from each type. They use both second level (.COM.BS) and top level (.BS).

I notice that countries that stick to one type or the other and don't mix tend to do better and have more domains registered.

The other thing I noticed is that some countries use “CO.” for commercial and some use “COM.”. But then again there are some that use both! Very frustrating to classify them. Just when you think you have them all classified, up pops something that doesn’t fit any classification system I have in mind.

If I can nail down a classification system for each domain it would be easier to know how to count each domain.

As for those that wish not to be counted. I think countries like .TV don’t want to be classified because I think they are not growing but shrinking. And they don’t want to admit it or have people notices it. If shrinking is known about it would make it harder to sell new domains to new customers.

This is a very large project and very complex project.

See what I mean. Hard to classify them. Each TLD has stupid little odd ball exceptions.

However, I like countries that us NIC.XX very helpful!
