Whois search utility

Where can I find a web-based tool to search the whois database

I am trying to find various permutations on a word and see which ones have been registered. I have been using the search tool on www.whois.net, but I am beginning to realize that it is getting more and more out of date. Are there any other ones out there that are a bit more updated?

An example of what I am looking is:

I have a tomato canning plant and I want my own site. Which ones of the following have been registered:
tomato
tomatoe
tomatos
tomatoes
canned-tomato
tomato-canning
(you get the idea...)

I would like to enter the term *tomat* and have all domains which contain the string tomat returned.

Where can I find such a beast? Whois.net is outdated.

You could use [netcraft.com...] which will search it's database of online sites that contain your chosen word. Mind you, this is online sites only, not registered domains, but it is a start.

Alternatively, you could try Domain Name Analyzer [findgoodnames.com], a small free domain query program. You enter in your chosen names (you'll have to type them all in or copy/paste from a list) and it will then then query the core database and report back with details.

Thanks Woz!

I had completely forgotten about Netcraft. I think they blanked out for a bit once and I then trimmed them from my bookmarks. Unfortunately they are only a little better than whois.net.

I've been thinking about this overnight but cannot think of any other solutions to your problem other than generating your list of words (tomat.com, tomato.com, tomatoe.com ets) and then putting it all into DNA. The only challenge I find with DNA is that if you set it running at full bore you will find the whois database shuting you out after a few minutes. I suggest you set it to one request at a time with a delay of 5-10 seconds between requests. It will take a little longer but it will get through the whole list (100s??) without being shut out and can be working in the background.

There is another new tool that is better then Whois.net but it is still beta and they don't allow more then 50 results yet.

[WhoisReport.com...]

Hope that helps.

I wonder why www.whoisreports.com smells of Google...

And a shoddy attempt at it. I analyzed both HTMLs and Google's is cleaner and better structured.

However they seem to offer a competent service, if they just did not have all these password protected areas.

Like I said, WhoisReport is Beta. I believe they password protect the areas to keep people out of the development areas. They are willing to show the site but they are not willing to show it all, yet.
