Coming to the aid of the little guy, Verisign Friday announced an upcoming Wait Listing Service (WLS). The plan is expected to charge people $40 a year for the right to register an expired domain name.
Not many details, but it really doesn't sound much different than the snapnames service. Does Verisign now just want a piece of the pie?
I know there are at least a few people here at least playing with the expiring domains market. I think this will kill the competition for the sites dedicated to reserving these domains.
1) When domain registrar competition was introduced, Verisign (Net Sol) systems were so antequated and dysfunctional it became almost impossible to transfer domains from them to another registrar.
2) Couple this with their long winded process delaying expired domains from being released and not allowing them to be thrown back into the pool in order that you could register them via another registrar. Their "we release domains in batches and cannot account for when your domain will be released" response
is a shocker. There were expired domains dating back to 96 still in their database.
3) Suprise, suprise, Verisign then acquire a domain auction business
4) To finish it off, they introduce the same sort of offering as snapnames allowing people to back-order domains in the event that they expire. So, when an expired domain is released, whose going to get it a snapnames client or a verisign client?
All in all, a questionable strategy to retain and keep web marketeers from never leaving their shores and having no option but to renew the domain with Verisign.
Im not amused and not a fan!
this will definitely give $40 verisign the waiting list game edge.
But I have another question.
Is registration with Network Solutions the same as verisign? Or are they virtually the same? If so I have a question about what pete said.
I had a domain registration record dispute with a third party registrant for one of my clients. They were the administrative contact, I wanted to move hosts, but can't do it without being the contact. After 2-3 weeks of phone calls and other hassles, they changed the administrative contact to ME, as requested by my client, who owns the domain, so that I could transfer hosts.
This domain was registered thru netsol, (everything I got email-wise had verisign on it). Now I went to another registrar today and initiated a transfer. I'm listed as admin contact, so I thought, 'No Problem', I can handle all of this.
What's the $199? Right now, the original registrant (remember, a third party, not the owner) is still the billing contact. Can anybody enlighten me? Here's what I thought: Change me to admin contact, I go to another registrar for cheap transfers, reply to the emails, voila! Right? Wrong? Other?
The new registrar has informed me that this WILL take 7 days. Is this true? I did it before, not a pressing time situation, but can't remember how long it took. (I transferred from register.com and they of course wanted me to reconsider, tried to give me a deal).
What kind of stuff (emails) am I going to see from Verisol?
If you're set up for email authentication you'll receive the usual confusing volley of antiquated emails forms ( note: one time I was using a Y? account and the line width in the email form was set too narrow....it took me a week and 2 45 minute "sit on hold sessions" to figure out why VeriSol kept rejecting the email. Once I set the email box a little wider then the stupid thing went through). Then after that you'll be spammed for the rest of your adult life. Then after that they'll sell you off to some other spammers. Then you'll receive junk mail for the next 10 years. I hope you don't have your real phone number.....

TM, it took me a while to get up off of the floor after reading your timeline.

Looks like I have at least 10 years after 'the rest of my adult life'. Just wonder how long I have with the other spammers ;) ;) ;)
