One of my .com domains has just expired. Is there a way to get it back - and if so can I use a different company to get it back?

Good luck with that. You normally have 45 days or so I believe - I would contact the company that manages your domain name and tell them you wish to renew immediately! If that doesn't work then it may goto an online auction.

Ideally you can. But unless you "intimately" know how this works, it's too risky to renew it with another company while the domain name's expired.

I suggest you bite the bullet for now and renew it with your current registrar, if possible. Then move it out roughly 45 days after renewing it with them.

If they tell you it's on "redemption period", there'll be a "penalty fee" to possibly redeem it before someone else does. Their doing this is a standard practice, so whether it's viewed as "shady", "ripoff", etc. depends on what side you're on.

Generally I agree, it's not practical to get it renewed at another registrar. Do as davezan suggest and bite the bullet and renew it immediately at your existing registrar, before it falls into redemption. You can always transfer it to another registrar after it's been renewed.
