A Record - How Do I Find It?

Really bugging me!

I have just registered hosting with <a hosting provider> for a client of mine who already has the domain. He said that he needs IP address for the new hosting so that he can change the 'A Records' of the domain.

Does anyone know what this means because I'm stumped and can't find anything in the hosting package that mentions IP addresses or A Records!

The host should give you the IP address for your website.

Your client wants/needs the IP address so that they can update the DNS A record. This is what is used by browsers and other internet applications to resolve www.yourclient.tld to the IP address.

I'm not sure you can do this with 1&1 unless you get your client to transfer the domain to them. And then you get into problems that the domains need to be owned by the same person that has the web hosting.

I have done this the other way around. I used the DNS management option on 1&1 to point to another host's name servers that contained the IP of the website. But I was able to add the domain in the control panel of the other host (without transferring the domain to them) - whereas on 1&1 this wasn't possible.

The hosting company won't give you the IP address of your webserver? I find that hard to believe. But if that is correct then you need to move to a different host.

No, it's not the IP that's the problem. If you can't set the domain up in the control panel then Apache can't figure out how to send the browser to the correct set of pages on the webserver.

Based upon the opening post, it seems that the client is utilizing a 3rd party DNS server. And they are asking for the IP address so they can update the A record.

This is what is required to get browsers to see the correct server.

As far as Apache knowing which website is which in a shared environment, that is up to the hosting company to establish handling. They do not need to control the domain registration or the DNS service in order to do that.

You can set up "external domains" and have domains which are registered elsewhere point to the 1&1's nameservers. You can do this without knowing anything about IPs or A records.
