Registrar problems and transferring domains

We have a small crisis situation on our hands and I was wondering if anyone could give us some advice.

As the subject of this post might suggest, we are experiencing problems with our registrar. Their renewal system constantly falls over and our domains have been going down after 3 or 4 unsuccessful attempts at renewing them. Often, it will appear that the domains have been renewed successfully and then they go down again a week or so later. It's cost a few thousand dollars so far.

From what I've heard on the grapevine, a lot of people are experiencing the same problem with the same registrar (who have today removed the live chat link from their website).

We have negotiated a deal with another very reliable registrar to transfer our domains at a very reasonable rate.

They have indicated that the DNS information associated with each domain could be moved along with the domains.

We have about 250 domains with registrar in question, a lot of the domains use their free WHO IS Protection Service.

We have 3-4 Adsense accounts with various profiles (different owners) which in most cases matches the WHO is information associated with a domain.....

What will happen if we transfer all the domains to a new account, and then go about changing the WHO is information once the domains have been transferred? Will this adversely affect the way our sites are ranked? What is the ideal way to transfer such a large number of domains?

Has anyone else had to deal with a crisis like this? What lessons were learned?

Thanks to anyone who can help out....

If it's who I think it is, it's because those domains are with that registrar's reseller account with them. So if you tried to "renew" them, they're actually telling that registrar to transfer those names to them.

They've sent notices about this since Feb. But since email's not as reliable as before, not everyone gets it. :(
