I have read the past posts about which domain name extensions that some people thought you ought to purchase. Most said .com & .org, a few said all you can get. I am once again bringing the question up to get an updated opinion from everyone. What extensions do you own and if you were just starting which ones would you purchase if you could? Thanks for your help.

As far as com/net/org is concerned, I usually try to get all of them. As far as ccTLD's go, I would at least rty to get the ".co.uk", ".de", ".fr" and maybe the ".kr", ."jp" and ".us" - this would give you best flexibility in order to grow into national (sub-)sites. I have not yet my mind up regarding ".biz", but why not.

In short:

  1. com/net/org
  2. co.uk/de/fr
  3. kr/jp
  4. us
  5. biz

Hope that helps.

Shows how much I know. I haven't even heard of some of those. I also notice you did not mention .info. What do some of those others relate to? That adds up if you are not sure that your site is going to make it when just starting. Thanks for the advice.

Put .info into #5 - haven't registred a single one of #5 yet.

I seriously think that .com will always be number one, country names follows second and all the rest are third.

If you have a great website then the domain name ext. matters little.
