would this be a bad option.

say i was buying like google or something and wasnt available.. would it be smart to buy say gooogle or would that confuse visitors?

I wouldn't suggest it. People may assume it is a spam site.

Unless it is a brand name.

I think you already know the answer.

Why else would you want that domain name, except for the association with Google?

I think it's an example... anyway, I wouldn't recommend it because you'd be given free traffic to that other website, in this case Google.

I realize it was an example.

But they DID say "like" Google. So, I assumed the site was equally famous, and so it would be confusing.

If you simply found a name you like, and the existing site has nothing to do with the topic of your site, and the existing site is not widely recognized by the public - then there isn't much chance of confusion and you aren't likely to run into a trademark problem.

The only question then, is, are the extra o's (or whatever) confusing.

You are going to lose some people just because they aren't going to remember exactly how many of the repeated letter there are in the domain name.

google was example.

the site really has nothing to do with the site... there a australian folk singing group or something and im making a sneaker search engine.

but yeah i just wouldnt want people to forget the 3 o-s
