domain names and/or sub domain names

Is it worth using sub domain names?

There are those who say you can save on domain fees for multiple sites by using sub domain names. Will search engines penalize you for using sub domain names, rather than a single domain for each site?

No. As a matter of fact you don't have to worry about cross linking websites since they are all on the same one. The biggest problem is that you now have long domain names like domain1.maindomain.com, domain2.maindomain.com. It may be harder to get people to link to those than individual url's.
