Just curious how many domains companies own...

Does anyone have an idea how many domains operating companies own? I'm thinking outside domainers: companies like media companies, consumer products companies, random IT companies. My company (a media company) owns domains we do not operate or develop in any way, and curious if this is not just us and what we should be doing.

I've aware of portfolios owned by larger companies that range from dozens to >1,000. The larger collections would relate to the span of products produced by large multinational conglomerates.

The smarter companies either utilize the domains to create product related sites or minisites.

Next in line for "intelligent design" are those companies that redirect their domains to related company sites.

Next in line are those companies that at least register their brands and brand typos.

My advice: Collect domains related to your business and build minisites. Don't interlink them to start, but consider providing "text" about related issues/sites (no hotlinks).

How big should a minisite be? A link is ok, if this has been answered elsewhere.

It's not about size. It's about generating value.

Define value: Loyal customer? Informed customer? Educated customer? Customer awereness? Deeply informed visitor? Visitor of any kind?

The old standard applies: "It ain't the meat it's the motion."

Define the job the website is meant to perform and design accordingly.

We own domains that are somewhat generic (focusing on our industry, or a specific topic, or maybe a brand we thought we'd launch but didn't) but are not actually brands right now. Other companies holding onto the same?

Yes, it is most definitely a strategy and likely one that is accelerating of late.
