If I have a domain called widgets.com, and lets says I create forum.widgets.com. Can I get a seperate host for forum.widgets.com? Is this even possible?

Yes, you can do this. You don't need to host forum.widgets.com at the same hosting company as www.widgets.com. You'll need to play around with the DNS settings on your domain name widgets.com. Your domain registration company should be able to advise.
