difference between www and www2

what is the difference between the www and www2 servers?

how is http://www.example.com different from [www2.example.com...]

They're just sub-domains. The name doesn't really matter. www & www2 are just the names that someone gave their web servers. You could name the servers:
[cheeseburger.example.com...]
[deadcats.example.com...]
and they could fulfill the same roles.

The use of 'www' was traditionally used to indicate that a server was used for serving web content...as opposed to say, 'gopher' or other content. Today the majority of Internet content is on the web, so the www prefix could be considered unnecessary by some.
