[news.yahoo.com...]

"TUNIS, Tunisia (Reuters) - The United States will keep control of the domain-name system that guides online traffic under an agreement on Wednesday seen as a setback to efforts to internationalize one of the pillars of the Internet."

[edit reason] Politics and webmaster forums don't mix, so let's not go there. :) [/edit]

I don't think we need to discuss the politics of the issue. If there's anything else of value to be added to the discussion I'd be interested to read it.

Considering that a valid technical reason has never been put forth for changing who controls the root servers and TLDs and how they are controlled, I'm not sure there is much to discuss.

I've heard money mentioned (i.e. generating money for the UN through fees/taxes) and control (censorship). Neither of those two reasons are valid technical reasons, and those were being pushed by very non-technical people.

Maybe it's the engineer in me, but don't fix what isn't broken...

What could change when the UN would have control?

The internet would change from being a network to being a notwork. :)

lol. thats really good jmcc. I don't understand why anyone would feel this should be swapped out of the U.S.? If it ain't broke don't fix it.

IMHO - the US does a decent job already . . so don't fix what isn't broken.

I must agree, being a european citisen who is very critical of US foreign policy (itīs the only thing I donīt like about the USA besides Kyoto), I think it is admirable that US domain registrars do not interfer even if US hatemail it posted online using domain names registered and even hosted in the US.
