I just received an email from Yahoo offering the chance to register domains for $X, with this condition:

at the conclusion of your initial registration period, 15 days prior to the anniversary of your billing date, and each year thereafter, your Yahoo! Domains registration will automatically renew for an additional year at the then-current standard rate.

I guess they don't want to say what the "then-current standard rate" is going to be.

What is that supposed to mean?

Comments?

Comment: I think the first thing I would do is ask them - Yahoo what it means.

Looks like it means whatever price Yahoo normally charges at that future date and they're implicitly reserving the right to charge more than what they are now "normally" charging.

There's no free lunch Zoobie. If they get you in with a discount offer to start they're certainly aiming to make up the money in some other part of the deal.

Bottom line: Just buy your domains and point them wherever you wish. Most package deals are not money savers in the end.

Guess you're right. I was hoping someone would buy one and see what happened because I've had problems with domains before...but I think asking them is the right thing to do. I can't imagine them suddenly charging $30 but you never know what bad business practices they have in store for the consumer.

Why should that be surprising? Every person and company doing business reserves the right to change prices anytime.

Always expect prices to keep going up. It's nice if it'll be reduced at some point, but don't expect them to be able to afford it for long.
