hi,

i want to retain my domain name registrar - who is also my mail server.

if i change nameservers will the MX record still point to my registrar?

simple question but still trying to fathom the 'ins & outs' of the DNS.

many thanks - rampzoid.

When you change nameservers you usually configure the records on the new DNS server as you see fit. So if you want the MX to point to your existing mail provider, that's up to you - you just need to set it up that way.

webdoctor - thanks for your reply.

the nameserver bit has me really confused.

if i change the 'parked' NS's of my domain registrar to new NS's for webspace are the 'A records' that point the domain to the webspace automatically changed by the (new)website host or do i have to change them also via the dns control of my registrar ie NS's, A records and anything else?

cheers.

Depends on the host, but most likely the answer is "No".

If you change the nameservers then the new nameserver will usually have a "blank" configuration for your domain (or have A records which point to a holding server - "this domain was recently registered by an example.com Inc customer and has not been configured")

Change the nameservers then immediately log in to the new nameserver control panel and see what's there - most likely nothing or useless records. Delete them and put the correct records in...

I've done this at least a dozen times over the last week and it's not a big deal.
