OK maybe this should be in GOOGLE forum but it is about domain names...er maybe.

I have a long 3 word domain name but also use a short acronym (say www.XYZ.com) which has a redirect to the main site.

Some people type the URL into Google's search but Google cannot find us.

In the long name site I do make mention of the short name in the index page, it has been there for 6 months and Google does crawl the main site.

This can't be a new problem surely.

Many Thanks

How are you doing the redirect to the main site?

The redirect is achieved by a REDIRECT statement in the .htaccess file on an APPACHE server.

Check your server headers [webmasterworld.com] on that short-domain, and see if it's a 301 or a 302 redirect. That might help diagnose the trouble.

I can control the type of redirect in my .htaccess but how will that enable Google to "know" that when people type in www.xyz.com they should be "taken" to the target domain?
