Repointing of a domain name

Current hosts are refusing to do so

My brother has a domain name thats pointed to a large auto traders directory site - he lists his cars for sale on his section and refers his customers to it.

He's now at the point where he wants to repoint the domain at his own website however the current (not sure of the term) server owners are say they cant repoint it. Now I know this is rubbish as he's domain is in his name and its just the firm being awkward .

Whats my next step in forcing them to repoint? Its a .co.uk domain

Is the server provided by the domain registrar and therefore it's the registrar that is giving him grief?

I'm assuming that is the case because otherwise wouldn't all he have to do is update his WhoIs record with new DNS entries?

Sorry if I'm confused.

Don't you just hate that!

What's their bona fide reason for making life difficult?

Talk nicely to them one more time. The art of the menance is to talk nicely but very clearly and deliberately, asking very pointed questions.

Ask to take your inquiry up the chain of command.

Check the registrar's WhoIs for added contact info.

Use a fax machine.

Failing all else contact your friendly family solicitor - hopefully your second cousin twice removed who owes you a small favor - and ask that he/she call on your behalf.

More often than not, when you hit an impasse like this, it's time to change registrars - sooooo - you contact a new, helpful registrar - one who knows who to call at the central registry OR who knows how to schmooze the other company ("Yeah, I know. We have PITA customers too. Can you help me here? Thanks.).

If your brother has FTP access to .htaccess , he can do a 301 redirect.

There is no reason they just say they cant do it! I must admit its possible my brother spoke to just a telesales rep and not teh technical department.

Maybe, or maybe its their canned response - Ive emailed the UK registry people for help.

Here goes.

Did you get this sorted?

You can get Nominet to change the Tag on the domain name to another, more flexible host. It does cost to get Nominet involved but not a great deal.
