Bought domain name. Thought purchase included email services.. Not so.

What to do now?

Apparently I bought my domain name from <snip> and it didn't come with a single email address. I was unaware that this was possible.

They are trying to charge me to get a single email account added to my domain name.

Is there a way around this or a cheaper way of adding email to a domain name? I have zoneedit running and have this site on a home server.

If you have a mail server running at home, you can consider that. Or check with some other companies, they might provide email services cheaper.

Normally when you register a domain name, that is all you get. Unless godaddy was running a special or something to offer a free email, etc

Hi bwall76 and welcome to WebmasterWorld. Please check your stickymail for a more detailed explanation for the edit of your post.

Domain price is a function of what is provided. Higher priced domains usually come with a package of extras, including minisite hosting, website templates, email, etc.

Many people want "domain only" services and so look for discount domain providers. Discount domains usually include the domain only.

Is there anyway to get around this, or do I have to purchase the email accounts separately now. I was thinking maybe I could buy a new domain name with accounts, but would like to get around it if possible with present domain. I could use my regualr email or my gmail account, but I'm about to get my business cards printed and would like my email on my card to be info@mydomain.com or sales@mydomain.com I've found alot of work arounds on the web, but haven't seen one for this problem.

Well you need to have a mail server to handle that part - directing the mail etc. IMO, pay the company the $10 to get an email address. It is not that much and it would probably be more stable in the long run.

If you are using a Windows server and you ony have one domain, you might check out www.smartertools.com for a free email server.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld!

sales@widget.tld is not recommended. The username sales will add to your score with some mail filtering algorithms and your email could potentially get tagged as spam.

Are not email addresses more to do with the hosting than the purchase of the domain name?

After all, it's the host that will have to set up DNS MX records for the email server and run the email server, the domain registration agent purely registers the domain.

If you are running the domain via a home based server you might want to check to see if your ISP will allow you to run an email server (SMTP on port 25 restrictions spring to mind) and then think about the options 1. Run your own email server, 2. Find someone that will do this for you, 3. Move the hosting to an external 3rd party.

Cheers

Zoneedit allows you to forward *@yourdomain.com to another email address.

All you then need to do is set your Email program up to send and receive mail from a [free] email account, and set the return address to yourname@yourdomain.com in your email program.

Then the free address will be invisible to the rest of the world.
