Domain forwarding propagation dns

I am not sure if I am right on this or not, but my understanding is that once you have registered a domain name and have it pointing to a company (GoDaddy, Yahoo, NetSol) that a domain name forward should only take a matter of minutes, or what ever time it takes for the company to apply the settings. The domain name has already propagated through the internet for the original DNS. Does a forward (with no actual changes of the domain name itself) have to propigate through the internet also?

Everything is still pointing to the original domain information, my hosting company is telling me that a forward takes between 48 hours, even though it used to only take 5 mins. I cleared my cache, I cleared the local machine DNS and the router... but they are saying that it is just like a regular NEW or TRANSFER domain and the new settings have to be sent through the net... so why does absolutly nothing change?

Thanks for your help!

If you were assigned specific, new name servers, upon accepting a hosting contract, then I believe it will take time for the new DNS to propogate. This assumes that you were originally assigned some version of a default DNS - perhaps the registrars DNS for their splash pages.

However, it is my recollection that 48 hours it took to update the zone files was "the old days" - the the updating of all of the .Com zone files was occuring somewhat more quickly. I could be mistaken.

Right on the money, WebWork. The COM NET Registry actually introduced (finally!) those
changes back in Sept. 8, 2004.

While nowadays it takes around at least 5 minutes up to 24 hours for domains to resolve,
it still depends on how soon registrars submit DNS changes, ISPs update, rate of TTL, etc.

But this is techincally NOT a DNS change, it is only a forward. The domain itself is not moving from one Name Server to another, it is simply being forwarded. My listing under WhoIS has not changed once! In fact the IP address that points to my domain has not even changed. My understanding is that only changes to your domain's DNS would require a proagation. A forward should be within minutes, nothing to the outside world is changing. It is kinda like a Meta Tag Refresh. I watch, and their site originally loads, and then transfers me to the domain I have set.

Without mentioning the company name - when you brought this information to the company's help center - did they provide any further information that might support their statement?

If it's simply a matter of internal forwarding - with no other changes - then it sounds incorrect. However, assuming it's incorrect, then why is it incorrect - and if it's incorrect then what next?

You may simply be dealing with a poorly trained helpdesk tech who looks up answers from a help file.

If the level of service is poor then you will certainly have other options in mind.
