Am I guaranteed about the ownership of domain?

Hello, I need to protect my personal information displayed in 'who is', so would like take advantage of Private Registration.

However a few doubts arise about the ownership of domain protected by 'Private Registration'.

The registrar says the "domain is registered in the name of Domains By Proxy" , so what does guarantee my ownership? Just a private agreement between me and the registrar? Legally who is the legitimate owner of the domain name <when private registration or domain proxy is used>?

As I am not US citizen (living in Italy), can I feel myself safe against the lost of my domain name if I opt for such a service?

Thanks

You never really own a domain name. Essentially you are able to lease it for an indefinite period of time. Domains by proxy basically takes over the "lease" aspect of the domain and you enter into an agreement with them by using their service.

I can tell you from personal experience that if any dispute arises about the domain Domains by Proxy will release your name without a court order. They will not protect any of your information including the billing information if someone calls and tells them they have a dispute.

Hello federico and welcome to WebmasterWorld.

Since contracts relating to domain name services vary somewhat from registrar to registrar the best place to ask for clarification about any registrar's policies and procedures is the registrar itself.
