How to upload via FTP?

I am thinking of starting up a web site using Dreamweaver MX 2004 to design it. Before I purchase a Domain Name (.com) I would like to clarify how I go about uploading my site via FTP. Will I also need web hosting? Is this needed to upload my site? Do Web Hosts supply a server for you upload to?
This is one thing I could never get my head around. Would I be right in saying that although paying for a .com entitles me to use a particular domain name it does not give you web space? You need to supply that yourself or pay someone else to supply it for you?
Bit unsure...
Many Thanks Guys.

Hi and welcome fatoomch. Yes you will need to purchase hosting separately. Once you purchase hosting the hosting company will supply you with all the neccesary information for you to upload your site via ftp to one of their servers. They will also provide you with dns information so you can change the dns at the place where you purchased the domain name.

I haven't used dreamweaver for some years but I believe it has a built in ftp function or you could use one of these [webmasterworld.com].

The easiest way is use internet explorer, that way you can treat the directory on the server like any directory on c drive.

The syntax is ftp://username:password@www.yourdomain.com

Once you have opened the directory you can then then drag the address to your favourites. That way you cn then click on the link like any other bookmark.

Then just copy and paste your files to the directory like you would moving files on the local C drive in windows explorer.
