Hello all,

This is my first post on these boards but I have been a webmaster for several years. Hopefully I will not violate any of the rules you have here within this post.

OK, I have a successful domain which I'll refer to as domain.com. I am adding a new section to the site and to keep with the domain I decided to do it as a subdomain, but I also purchased a new domain name, which better describes the section, and will be shorter and easier to access via using that instead of a subdomain, but I'm thinking there will be some drawbacks to using the second domain.

First off, the primary domain has a couple of great keywords in it, which helped make us successful. Secondly, another subdomain on the site offers the forum area, which will be used for the new addition to the site as well.

So I have decided to go ahead with the subdomain, and point the new domain to that, does anyone see any problems with this, or a better way to approach the matter?

What I will be doing is setting up 1.domain.com as the new area, with the main site being domain.com, and the forums being 2.domain.com.

The main site and the forums subdomain are established and have a pagerank of 6 and 5 respectively, so my thought was that using a subdomain would help keep the integrity of the site.

Thanks for the feedback, glad to be here.

There's a multitude of approaches that each have adherants and individual merits.

What about the "all your eggs in one basket" argument?

Why not use the new domain to create an "on topic" site and use a sub-domain to create relevant but non-duplicate material?

That way, if you are surviving/profiting based upon free SERPs promotion you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

Webwork,

I think I know what you mean... so would you suggest possibly using the new domain not only as a pointer but perhaps a limited content site that mainly directs people to the subdomain? Or were you implying something else as an option (I know there are tons, but what's the best, in your opinion?)

Fresh/original content.

Not necessarily interlinked, but if the content between the domain and the sub-domain isn't duplicate I'd be less worried. You might not link the 2, however, if that's the only outbound or inbound link structure. Think 'natural linking' and act accordingly.
