I have been collecting domains for a number of years now, sold a few, but would like to take it to the next level.

i'd say it's been a hobby, but I would appreciate some advice on the best way to take it a bit more serously, how to generate income on the domains I already have, even if just to cover the renewals, but also to be far more effective in selling.

I did throw them on sedo a few years back but never generated interest that way, I am happy to put the work in but would be grateful if I could be pointed in the right direction.

If the domains have no natural type-in traffic then chances are they're DOA unless they're the 1-in-3,000 domains that happens to have actual "curb appeal".

In the late 1990s there were many people registering "catchy domain words", thinking they only need to hit on the right one to make their million. Those domains are now cigarette butts littering the internet highway.

The only way to play the game now is to have money to invest in undervalued high traffic value domains and an approach for "getting to them before someone else does" (Hint: It's called the telephone) OR to play bidding wars for the interesting domains that still drop from time to time.

Thanks Webwork..

So is it possible to give my fag butts ;) some added value?

I do believe I hold a few which are prime, but I guess what you are saying is they have to generate traffic to be of interest.

would I really have to create fully working sites for them or indeed a traffic generating business to sell them on?

That is a bit of work...

Could I get away with an alpha site ready to be developed or is traffic king?

Or should I simply put up a holding page and concentrate marketing it for traffic?

I can hear myself sounding naive ;) but you must have found yourself in this situation at somepoint? what would you advice ..
