Host wants to charge...

for hiding whois information for a .net domain

When I purchased my .net domain from my webhost, I wasn't given an option to "Hide domain information". I asked them if they could do this and they replied saying they could...for a fee (£8).

Is this normal for a .net domain?

Its normal for most non .uk domain names, though quite a few registars are offering it free for a year as a special offer when you register a new name or transfer a name to them.
