We are in the process of finalizing a move from an old web host to a new one and have run into an issue. All of our domains were registered by them and we were able to move of our main domains over just fine before this domain lock stuff was put into place. However, we can’t move the rest of them now that we are ready to close out our last server on the old host because they are in domain lock.

Over 20 e-mail and phone attempts to contact the old host have gone unanswered. We have sent letters to their address listed on the BBB unsatisfactory rating page but nothing has come of that either. We’ve even attempted a search for the “president” of the company but evidently this guys is about as hard to find and Jimmy Hoffa. All we can find are UPS store boxes and disconnected phone numbers.

Any guesses why we’re leaving them? Their refusal to provide customer service is what caused us to leave in the first place and now it’s just laughable.

Is there any other way to get the domain lock removed on these domains?

Apparently, they are resellers for some accredited registrar. Who is listed as the registrant of the domains when you do a whois query? If you are listed as the registrant, try finding out the name of the registrar and appeal to them to unlock or change the name servers for your domains. If your old host is listed as the registrant and they are unreachable, then you will have little alternative, other than to register new domain names.

Good luck.

I haven't saved the URL, but there is a tool out there that will let you find out the top level accredited registrar. There are procedures for domain name disputes. I went through all this recently and got my domain - it tooks almost two months to find out the right questions and whom to ask - the "American" web host where I accepted my "free domain" was not apparently the domain name reseller - which was in Singapore.

We are the registrant and administrative contact, they're the billing and technical contact on the Whois.

Thanks for the replies and the private e-mails.
