What are the chances of getting an entire database of every domain name? Or at least most domain names? Basically so we can place a domain search on our website from our own database?

Surely one of those php scripts would be better than having a database of the entire com/net/org/biz/info? All you'd really have to check is if the domain in question had a nameserver. In Linux/Unix that can be accomplished with a single command.

At a guess there are over 45 million domains and the lists are updated twice a day. That does not include at least 20 million cctld domains.

There are "zone file" access programs for com/net and other TLDs. See:

[verisign.com...]

for com/net.

However, it'd always be lagging, so before registering any domain that seems available, you'd still need to check the real-time database (i.e. via the appropriate registry).

Ironically, Verisign's website's WHOIS doesn't update in real time, although their own internal
systems do. Just had a chat with one of their reps 2 days ago regarding a domain name.
