My hosting service just started offering a bunch of new extensions, including .cc, .ws, .tv, and .name
I know what they all stand for and how they can be used (.name is limited to personal sites, the others are just generic country codes for small tropical islands), but what I'm wondering is if they're useful.
I've managed to buy some REALLY good domain names, theoretically. What I mean by that is that they'd probably sell for $100,000+ if they were .com names, and they're just dictionary terms, so there's no trademark issues.
So, let's say if "widget" would be appraised at over 6 figures as a .com, is it worth anything as a .cc, .ws or whatever else?
Once it gets listed with Google and others, will they rank high for those direct keywords more easily? (For example, typing in "widget".)
Or am I acting out of pure and utter stupidity by buying up un-trademarked, competitive-keyword domain names with obscure extensions?
Anyway, if you could share your insights on this I'd appreciate it alot.
Thanks
ANY competent host can host a site with these domain extensions. I strongly advise against buying domain names from a web host. Find a registrar you like for domain names, and a host you like to host the sites. If you do this it is easier to switch registrars or host if either fail to perform adequately.
Google doesn't care about domain extensions in ranking. Thus widgets.ws is on equal footing with widgets.com. Of course widgets.ws is far less desirable in terms of people remembering the domain name. The ONLY advantage to widgets.ws would be to get good Google rankings, and being able to convert on this traffic when people landed on your site.
