What's the process involved in selling a domain...or a domain and the website's contents?

I'd agree with ebay. planet-tolkien sold pretty well on ebay recently. You could also just put that its "for sale" on the front page.

What factors decide how much money a site/domain sells for?

So anyone knows what a 3 character domain in the .com TLD would make these days or does it depend on what sense the 3 characters would make from the buyer's side. And are there any realistic references regarding the price of a domain when selling.

Well..let me put it this way. If I wanted to sell you a domain and website, how would that transaction be best handled? Would a third party be required?

If there's significant money involved, I'd say yes (even between friends).

"How", if you already have a buyer in the wings, depends on who you are doing business with and whether you are an experienced judge of character.

To play it safe you used Escrow.com to hold funds whilst a property transfer takes place. If you are dealing with a major player - real businessman/woman - you don't need an Escrow service is what my experience has been.

If you're asking "how do I find buyers" then here's the deal: You don't. They find you. Truth. Truly. Give up all other hope, unless it's a good name and you are prepared to sell it for pennies on the dollar. Then put it up at a domain forum.

For every rule there's an exception, but in domains the exceptions are like moon rocks. They're that rare. You could attempt to proactively sell a domain like Drugs.com or Loans.com to a major corporation. There's about 100 domains that fit this model. You don't own one. If you did you'd already be rich based on PPC traffic and therefore you'd know.

Listing domains on Ebay or GreatDomains isn't what makes the sale. The domain makes the sale. The domain and pricing it right.

Want info about pricing? Don't get an appraisal. 99.99% of appraisal services are incompetent. Use a good domain forum and ask for appraisals.

Good domain forum? DomainState and DNForum.

That's about 80% of what it has taken me 6 years to learn. Anything more and I'll have to charge you. ;0)
