Great! They must have read my post last year about India domains (.in) [webmasterworld.com]. ;) Thanks for the heads-up. I just grabbed a few.

This is where you start from:
[registry.in...]

Lot of Accredited Registrars are facing a huge problem because of the domain rush. Most of them are down for hours, there is automated registrations happening from atleast 3 major Accredited Registrars from India.

All the domains with 1 and 2 alphabets are reserved. I have not come across any major domain squatters yet but most of the names are gone.

You still might find some good dictionary words. So keep trying...

At first glance, the Indian domain market may seem to be a good bet because of the huge population approaching 1 billion people. This is a potentially enormous market. However, we should keep in mind that the per capita income in India is very low relative to industrialed nations like the US, UK, Japan, or Germany. According to Worldbank [worldbank.org] statistics from 2003, the GNI per capita in international dollars is $2,880, ranking India 143 out of 208 nations. The UN [un.org] statistics for 2003 quantify per capita income of 2,840 U.S. dollars per year.

With this low level of income, the majority of .IN domain prices are unlikely to see the stratosperic prices seen in leading TLDs. The larger domain players likely realize the limited aftermarket potential and are letting the smaller speculators (lemmings) grab everything in sight.

I just noticed that apparently .in domain names can be registered by anyone, regardless of where they live.
