so i have lets say widgetnet.com and bought widget.net some time ago. i've been afraid to make a complete change to the new one for fear of ruining my solid google rank in the engines.

my plan is to change the name of the site on the logo and in all places to the new name (while still actually being redirected to the old name.)and then to simply 301 redirect people from the new widget.net to the old site. but also i will still use the old url when getting people to link in.

does this make sense, calling my site widget.net but really using the old domain exclusively to actually house the site and to link o? is it a smart way to go or no?

after creating the new site, and before 301'ing the old site, wait several weeks for the new site to show up on search results. otherwise your site will now show up in SERP's for several weeks, even though PR may be preserved.
