If I have a site say widget-books.com and find out that for example widgetbooks.com is available does anyone know if there is a problem simply pointing that new domain to a current site?

Also the same for example of widget-books.us? Could I just point that domain to our site as well? My concerns really are it effecting our Google ranking and I don't really see the point in simply re-building a site with the same stuff on it!

Any help anyone could offer would be really appreciated.

Pointing other domains to your website won't be a problem as long as you make sure that this is done via an HTTP 301 redirect. In other words, you should configure your webserver so that on access to a secondary domain name a HTTP 301 response pointing to your primary domain is returned.
