Domain renewal grace period

How long before name becomes available?

When WHOIS data for a domain changes to "renewal required" - ie, the period it was registered for has passed - how long until it opens up for random Joe Punter to snap up?

Does the previous owner have any particular rights (ie first dibs) or is it free for all when the registration period passes?

Cheers
Scott

Varies by registrar and the relationship the domain owner has with the registrar in my observation and experience. If the account is a 1000+ corporate account the registrar may withhold lapsing the domain for awhile longer.

There are some general rules that apply but I don't find them entirely reliable.

If you are going after a domain your best best is to employ several of the drop services.

Cheers Webwork :)

Do you know if it varies for different TLDs or it's basically the same?

I knew you were going to ask for the specifics . . .;-)

There was a post back here not so long ago that did a good job of laying out the official timelines (at least for .com, which should be the same as .net).

I forget the exact timeline. Something like 30 days post renewal date to renew, 15+ days after the 30 for the 'we really mean it, redemption period, now you have to pay extra' period, and then, after that 5 days to the actual delete button is hit.

.Org may be slightly slower to delete.

Sorry, I'm about to run out on a date with my wife or I'd look it up. It's in here. Probably search on the term 'redemption period' or 'deletion cycle'.
