I just received an email from this place asking us to register a .us extension for our domain, how important is it to have this .us domain?

If you feel you don't need it, don't get it.

Not important at all, unless you fear somebody else buying it.

And don't buy it off the people who sent you the email, no point encouraging the spammers.
