Im sure this is pretty basic for all of you but bare with me.

My domain name is registered with company A, and im trying to have that name pointed to company B. Company A's control panel only allows me to change my A records and IP addresses.

Company B (web host) keeps telling me that Company A needs to change the name servers to their settings, but Company A says i only need the site IP address in the A records for it all to work. I have done that, but my site is down every other hour or so.

Since i dont really have much knowledge, can anyone interpret this and give me some advice, or have a link with somewhat basic explanations? Thanks in advance

1st question: is your domain name registered with a registrar or a reseller for one?

Registrars form reseller partnerships to expand their services, especially hosting providers.
Either way, you should have the option to either use their DNS manager or even change
nameservers.

Try this: contact your domain name provider again and ask them this: how do I change
the domain's DNS to a completely different pair?

Im not exactly sure. Our company's phone service provider is the domain provider, Cbeyond if that helps at all.

What exactly does it mean to switch a DNS to a different pair?

Thanks for the help
