Does dot .us help or hurt with USA Search ranking

Hello all

I apologize if this subject has been already discussed.

I am in the ecommerce business and I was shocked to see that a very popular domain name I was looking for finally became available. I immediately purchased it!

The only thing is that even though the word is very popular the extension is dot .us instead of the popular dot .com or dot .biz.

My questions is if I decide to build a site using the dot .us will it hurt or help with the USA search engine rankings.

I was told that when someone does a search for a topic on any popular search engine that these search engines look for the dot .com results first followed by the dot .org then .biz and then later the other less popular dot extensions.

Is this true? If so is it even worth using this dot .us to build my new site? Will I be just be losing time and money trying to build and promote a domain name with a dot .us extension that has no chance?

Can anyone with expertise in this field able to answer my questions?

Thanks!

It should neither help nor hurt with any major SE AFAIK.
