Registering Multiple Domains to Protect a Brand

Preserving brand awareness associated with a domain name

The main/active domain is widget.org and I’m contemplating registering the widget.biz, widget, com, widget.net, etc. and redirecting to the main domain.

The site is starting to get a lot of exposure in a competitive area and I don’t want competitors moving in on my name. Although it’s not a big expense to claim the additional names, I’m wondering if it is really worth it.

Has anyone ever had difficulty with a competitor capitalizing on your name under a different domain?

(I know it’s copyright infringement, but I’d rather not call the lawyer if I can prevent these things ahead of time)

Registering the same name under different extensions is the only way to ensure no one
else uses them to exploit you.

If someone else takes it, although you have an option or 2 to get it from them, it can
take time, money, and effort that's better used elsewhere.
